Working with Children

Treatment Specialties

Trauma

Therapy can help individuals that experience trauma with the emotional and physical responses associated with the events. A trauma may be a singular event or it may be an experience that was long-lasting or during childhood. Counselling can be a highly effective tool to manage symptoms of post-traumatic stress including the memories, thoughts, and emotions associated with the trauma. I use varying modalities of therapy including trauma-focused talk therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

Anxiety

Most people have experiences of feeling nervous, worried, or mildly anxious with minimal disruption to their day to day life. When anxiety becomes a barrier to participating in work, social activities, and joyful experiences, it can be helpful to seek support from a therapist. Creating healthy coping strategies, self-awareness, noting physical symptoms, triggers, thoughts and behaviours, and associated emotions can result in minimizing the impact anxiety has on your life.

Depression

Low mood may be situational or a long-lasting diagnosis of depression. Psychotherapy can allow an individual to explore the causes of low mood and healthy coping strategies to ease the discomfort of emotional distress. Symptoms of depression such as decrease in interest in previously enjoyed activities, low motivation, loss of engagement with social interactions, negative thoughts of self, sleep disruptions, and weight changes are indicative of a need for support.

Children and Adolescents

Changes in behaviours such as anger, irritability, whining, changes in sleep patterns, or withdrawing from social and family relationships may be indicative that your child is feeling emotionally overwhelmed. The many changes during the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on many children, how they perceive safety and predictability, and reduced access to very important social interactions. Working with children, I review their emotions that led to the behaviour, seek the physical cues that are associated with the emotion, and access healthy coping strategies. This may include seeking support from parents and/or school staff to help regulate their emotions.

Grief and Bereavement

Grief and bereavement counseling is used to help process the intense emotions associated with the loss of a family member or friend. This can have long term benefits for healing. Therapy can also address thinking patterns sometimes associated with grief that may lead to feelings of anger, guilt, and blame.

common questions

Therapy is based on the goals you would like to achieve. We would work together to develop a plan to address emotional distress, thoughts of worry, lessening the emotional impact of trauma, or general challenges that disrupt your quality of life. You can expect to talk about your feelings and emotionally upsetting topics, question thought patterns, and create strategies to cope with stress. We may look at your behaviours that may contribute to the distress, relationships in your life, and current situations that might feel overwhelming. Therapy does not often provide a “quick fix” as it can take time to heal emotional pain and learn and incorporate new ways of thinking, behaving, and managing emotions.

Generally, each session is 60 minutes. If you would like to book a longer (90 minutes), please feel free to indicate so and the rate will be adjusted to the amount of time required.

I bill clients directly and provide an official receipt which may be reimbursed by your insurance provider. Please ensure you have coverage for a Social Worker (MSW).

Generally, clients prefer to start at one session per week and as progress occurs, may space out appointments to once every two weeks to monthly.

What is discussed during sessions is completely confidential. Limits to confidentiality include when there is known harm to a child, planned harm to self or planned harm to someone else. Additional resources would be required by law to be notified during these situations.

My professional fee is $140.00 per hour with most appointments 60 minutes in length. Invoices will be provided within 7 days of appointments and payments are due within 7 days following. Payments are accepted by cash or Electronic Transfer. It is my practice to charge my hourly rate on a prorated basis (I will break down the hourly cost) for other professional services that you may require such as report writing, telephone conversations that last longer than 15 minutes, attendance at meetings or consultations which you have requested

A therapist should allow you to feel heard, validated, and supported. You want to ensure you have a feeling of comfort and safety. You want to ask if the therapist has knowledge and experience with the concerns you want to address. I offer a free 15-minute consultation with new clients and would also be happy to re-refer a client to a new clinician if I feel their needs require expertise outside of my scope of practice.

The number of sessions will depend on your needs. You may have concerns that can be addressed in a few sessions or more complex issues that require longer sessions. Some clients receive therapy on and off throughout their lives.

At this time, sessions are held virtually.
